Celebrating American Independence: The Spirit of 4th July

As America celebrates its Independance Day, we celebrate the relationship between
The East India Company and The United States of America.

The Boston Tea Party: A Prelude to Independence

On 16 December 1773, American colonists boldly resisted British tyranny by staging the Boston Tea Party. Disguised as Mohawk Indians, the Sons of Liberty boarded British ships and dumped 46 tonnes of tea into Boston Harbour. This act of defiance was a direct response to the Tea Act, which imposed unfair taxes and threatened colonial merchants' livelihoods. The Boston Tea Party ignited a fire of resistance that set the colonies on a path towards independence.

The repercussions were swift. The British government's punitive Intolerable Acts only strengthened the resolve of the colonies, leading to the formation of the First Continental Congress in 1774 and unifying the quest for self-governance and freedom.

Our Boston Tea Party Collection
A revolutionary tea in the true sense of the word.

Our 'Boston' blend is a skilful combination of teas from China, India, and Kenya, crafted to be strong and full-bodied. This blend emulates the smoky black 'Bohia' tea that was tipped into the sea, but with a much more pleasant taste!

Merging history with literary fantasy

Nearly 100 years later, in 1865, Lewis Carroll published the timeless classic Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, featuring the whimsical Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. To commemorate these anniversaries, British artist Rory Dobner creatively links the two by reimagining the Mad Hatter's Tea Party aboard a British ship in Boston Harbour, merging history with literary fantasy.

This year also marks a truly momentous occasion – the 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, an event which helped shape and define the America we know today, and in which the East India Company played an unknowingly but significant part. It was, in fact, 342 chests of East India Company tea that was dumped into the Boston harbour waters from The East India Company ships. Read the story.
